Financial Aid Programs

Federal Pell Grant
This federal student financial aid program is the foundation upon which financial aid packages are based. Annual award amounts vary according to student enrollment status and the payment schedule provided by the U. S. Department of Education. Pell Grants are Federal funds that do not have to be repaid. Federal Pell Grants are paid to students once each term, two weeks into the semester. Financial aid is awarded only after all required documents are received, reviewed, and approved by Alabama Southern Financial Aid staff.

Pell Grant awards are prorated according to the number of hours in which the student enrolls and attends each term. Awards are prorated according to the following table:

6 - 8 credit hours - Student receives 50% of full award for the term
9 - 11 credit hours - Student receives 75% of full award for the term
12 or more credit hours - Student receives 100% of full award for the term

Students are paid according to the number of credit hours they are enrolled in as of the end of the College's official drop and add period. Students who take fewer than six hours may be eligible to receive Federal Pell Grant benefits. Your award letter indicates the amount as a full time student. If a student goes full time in the Fall and Spring, then he/she will have NO Pell funds available for Summer term. Any Pell funds not used in Fall and Spring terms will be carried over into Summer term.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
This federal grant program is administered by ASCC and provides grants to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. FSEOG funds are extremely limited, and are distributed to students in the most need based on a priority system using the student's expected family contribution (EFC).

Federal Work Study (FWS)
This federal work study program provides jobs for qualified students who have financial need and who desire to earn part of their educational expenses. FWS awards vary widely, with students working 8 to 15 hours per week. Student workers are paid the prevailing minimum wage, which is currently $5.15 per hour. Students are paid once per month, on the last working day of the month. Interested students may apply for FWS by submitting a resume/application to the Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office will circulate the resume to offices with openings. The offices with openings may, at their discretion, interview several candidates for the position(s). Hiring is competitive. We will not be able to fund all students interested in working.

Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP)
To be eligible for this state-funded grant program, students must be residents of the state of Alabama and must be able to demonstrate financial need. Students are selected to receive ASAP based on a priority system using the student's expected family contribution (EFC).
